Costume Design For Axis Dance Company
“ Harmony of Souls”
Choreographed by Dazaun Soleyn
All materials (except for the leggings ) have been sourced from local second hand stores. The tops are handmade from linen, silk, cotton, canvas, and chiffon fashioned from two traditional kurtas. The bottoms are linen and sourced from Salvation Army and the leggings are from good ol’ target.
Design Concept:
When watching “harmony of souls” during the creation process, I felt transported to a cathedral, and felt as though I was in the presence of something sacred. With this experience in mind, I sourced two formal Kameez, which are long tunics worn in the Indian subcontinent, from Salvation Army. These two shirts became the design concept. I deconstructed the shirts and made two new tops that lived in the same world yet had their own signature. Each are designed uniquely to each body and embellish all of their movement.
